Digital marketing in Madeira: what works and what it costs.
How to do digital marketing in a tourist economy, the foundation that comes before ads, what it costs in 2026, and how to choose who does it, with no empty promises.
Digital marketing in Madeira works as in the rest of the country, with one difference: your customer is half local, half visitor, and demand concentrates in a handful of months. So the order matters: first the foundation (fast website, Google listing, SEO), then paid traffic as the season approaches. Costs split into the same three blocks as always, foundation, traffic and presence, detailed in the national guide; hiring runs €40–80/hour or a retainer depending on scope, and nobody serious promises "first page on Google".
| Block | What it is | How it is usually paid |
|---|---|---|
| Foundation | Fast site, Google listing, SEO | project €800+ or €49+/month |
| Traffic | Google/Meta ads | % of spend or hourly |
| Presence | Social media, content | retainer or €40–80/hour |

What changes in a tourist economy
The first difference is the dual audience. A restaurant, a car rental or a shop in Funchal speaks at the same time to those who live on the island and those who visit it one week a year, and the latter search in English, decide on a phone and buy weeks before travelling. Marketing that only speaks Portuguese and only lives on social media hands half the market to those who do not.
The second is seasonality. Demand concentrates from April to October, and the budget must follow that clock: the foundation gets built in the low season (when there is time and clicks are cheaper), traffic intensifies as the season nears, and September is not paid for with ads bought in August, it is paid for by the SEO and the listing that worked all year.
The foundation that comes before any ad
Every euro spent on traffic falls into a leaky bucket if the foundation is missing. Foundation means: a fast website that works on a phone and says clearly what is sold, to whom and why (from €800, or from €49/month as a subscription); the Google listing, complete, with photos and correct hours; and baseline SEO, titles, descriptions, sitemap, that makes the site appear in searches the listing does not cover.
Most of this the business itself can do without paying anyone: the SEO for websites guide lists the five no-code actions that solve the essentials, and the free audit tells you in 30 seconds where the gaps are. Hiring for the foundation only makes sense once the diagnosis is done and what is missing is hands to execute.
What digital marketing costs
Costs split into three blocks, foundation (the website and SEO, paid once or as a subscription), traffic (the ad money, which is yours, plus the management fee of whoever runs it) and presence (social media and content, typically a retainer or hourly, €40–80/hour for freelancers). The digital marketing costs guide takes each block apart, with the billing models and what each one hides.
When choosing who does it: an agency brings team and process for large scopes; a freelancer brings a light cost structure and whoever answers is whoever executes; DIY is viable for the foundation and simple presence. What never changes: whoever shows no written scope, metrics or ownership of the accounts (the pixel, the listing, the ads are always yours), that is the most expensive conversation of all.
Paid traffic: when it makes sense on the island
Ads make sense when there is something urgent and specific to sell: the opening of a venue, the high season of an activity, an event, the last week of availability of a lodging. They also perform well on high-intent searches, "airport transfer", "airport car rental", where the buyer already knows what they want and SEO does not position you yet.
They make little sense as a permanent correction for a slow site with no listing and no clear message: you pay for the click and lose the visit, twice. The honest sequence is diagnose (audit), fix the foundation, and only then buy traffic for what already converts.
How to choose who runs your marketing
- Scope in writing. What gets done, at what rhythm, with what deliverables, before the price.
- Agreed metrics. What gets measured (contact requests, bookings, sales, not "impressions") and where it is visible.
- Ownership of the accounts. Google listing, ad account and pixel in your name from day one.
- Realism about timelines. SEO takes months; whoever promises first page in weeks is selling something else.
- Verifiable references. Work with names and results told by whoever paid for it.
