Website subscription: what it is, what it costs and when it pays off.
It is the model changing how small businesses get online, a professional website with no upfront investment and maintenance included, yet almost nobody explains how it actually works. This guide takes it apart: what is included, what it costs, and when it pays off (or does not).
A website subscription (WaaS) is a professional website paid for monthly rather than through an upfront project fee. My plans cost €49, €99 or €199/month and include design, hosting, SSL, backups, maintenance and monthly content-change time; VAT at the legal rate where applicable. Launch prices are guaranteed for the first 12 months of the commitment and may change afterwards under the published terms. Compare code ownership and buyout terms before choosing.
| Plan | Monthly fee (2026) | Pages | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Starter | €49/month | up to 5 | An essential professional presence |
| Growth | €99/month | up to 12 | SMEs growing with local SEO and a blog |
| Commerce | €199/month | up to 25 | Selling online, bookings and payments |

What is a website subscription?
A website subscription, Website as a Service (WaaS), flips the traditional model: instead of commissioning a website for €2,000 and then handling hosting, updates and maintenance yourself, you subscribe to the website the way you subscribe to software. You pay a fixed monthly fee and the provider delivers the finished site, hosts it, keeps it secure and makes the content changes your plan includes.
The real shift is about risk. In the classic model, the upfront investment is all yours, and if the provider disappears, you are left with a site you cannot manage. With a monthly subscription, the provider must keep the site working every month to keep the client: the incentive is aligned with your results, not with delivering a project and waving goodbye.
What is included in the monthly fee?
This is where models separate from ordinary hosting, or from a decorative monthly charge. A serious website subscription includes, at minimum:
- Professional design tailored to your brand, a customized base template with your colours, logo and content, not a generic untouched layout.
- Hosting, SSL and domain management, design and hosting bundled together is the hallmark of the model: you purchase nothing separately.
- Automatic backups and security, regular off-server copies, software updates and monitoring.
- Continuous maintenance, the site software is updated every month without you thinking about it.
- Monthly time for changes, typically 30 to 90 minutes to swap texts and images and, on higher plans, publish blog articles.
- Email support with a response time, 24h on the entry plan, 8h or less on the higher ones.
Compare with the classic model: each of these six lines is a separate item in a traditional quote, design, hosting, backups, maintenance, changes and support. See what each one costs in the website price guide.
Subscription, custom build or do it yourself?
All three models produce websites, but they solve different problems. The honest choice depends on your case, not on ideology:
| Model | Upfront investment | Ongoing costs | Makes sense for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Website subscription | €0 | €49–€199/month (all included) | SMEs that want a professional presence without technical management |
| Custom site + maintenance | €1,500 – €25,000+ | €150–€400/month + hosting | Unique features, full code ownership |
| DIY (Wix, WordPress) | €0 – €300 | €10–€40/month + your time | Validating ideas, personal projects |

Ranges for the Portuguese market in 2026. Over three years, a custom site with maintenance costs €6,900–€20,400; a subscription, €1,764–€7,164, the full calculation is in the price guide.
Rule of thumb: if the website is the shop window and the contact machine of the business and has no exotic technical requirements, the subscription delivers more for less risk. If the website is the product, complex bookings, ERP integrations, client portals, then it is a custom project, and a subscription would fall short.
How much does a website subscription cost in Portugal?
In 2026, my plans are Starter (€49/month), Growth (€99/month) and Commerce (€199/month). What changes between them is not just the number of pages: it is the service level, monthly change time, local SEO, booking and payment integrations and support priority. The launch price is guaranteed for the first 12 months; after that, the current price table applies with at least 30 days' notice. VAT at the legal rate will be added where applicable.
Before signing any monthly website subscription, confirm five details that separate a good plan from a bad one:
- Commitment: 12 months is the standard; it is what makes the €0 start possible. Confirm what happens if you cancel early.
- Ownership: your content must always stay yours, and a domain you already own must remain yours. Confirm how the site buyout works at the end of the contract.
- Change time: ask how many minutes per month are included and what happens to unused time (it usually does not roll over).
- What counts as extra: structural redesigns, additional pages and new integrations are usually quoted separately, it should be in writing.
- Taxes: confirm whether the fee includes VAT; where applicable, it is charged at the legal rate in force.

Website subscriptions were designed for small businesses, and for them they are the shortest path between "I need a website" and "I am online receiving enquiries". It makes particular sense for:
- Those starting out now who do not want to tie up €1,500–€6,000 before the first sale.
- Those without a technical team who do not want to hear about updates, backups or certificates, they want the site to work.
- Those who want predictable costs: one fixed monthly fee, with no surprise hourly billing.
- Those who need to launch fast: the first version is ready in 7–14 business days.
On the other hand, it does not make sense if you need a custom web app or system (complex bookings, marketplaces, ERP integrations), if you want full code ownership from day one for an internal team to develop, or if the project is a personal experiment that justifies a €10/month DIY builder. Honesty first: selling a subscription to someone who needs custom software is bad for both sides.
How it works, from brief to launch
The subscription process is shorter than a custom project precisely because it eliminates decisions that do not affect the result:
- Plan choice and onboarding (day 1). You confirm the plan by number of pages and features and fill in the onboarding form: goals, references, access credentials.
- Materials delivery. Logo, texts, images. The clock only starts when everything arrives, the same pattern as any project, see the timeline guide.
- First version (7–14 business days). Professional template tailored to your brand, with the pages of your plan.
- Revisions and launch. Agreed revision rounds, feedback applied, site live with SSL, sitemap and analytics, and from there, monthly evolution with your plan change time.
